Celebrating 40 years

Join us looking back on the stories that make up forty years of bikes.

In 1981, three friends decided to start building their own mountain bikes to handle off-road riding around Vancouver. Forty years later, a lot has changed, but the big things haven’t—a lifelong obsession with bikes, and an unrelenting desire to design and build the best mountain bikes possible.

To celebrate our 40th anniversary, we’re taking a look back at the stories, riders, friends, adventures, failures, successes, places, and bikes that brought us from way-back-when to now. As we look back, we’ll also share where we’re going. Because from unexplored trails, to design breakthroughs, to the next generation of riders—there’s so much to look forward to.

Join us in our 40th Anniversary celebration. Send in photos of your favourite bike you’ve owned from Rocky Mountain and the stories behind them! We’re excited to share some of the stories we collect on Facebook and Instagram, as well as feature some on bikes.com.

It's 28 years later and I can still sit for hours just staring at the geometry, the gorgeous metallic paint, and that spectacular Equipe font.

Cami Bragg's 2020 Altitude

"This was my first 27/5” carbon framed bike and woah, what a difference. Coming off the Reaper (which was also a favourite!) I loved it immediately. First day we got it I took it to Coast Gravity Park and it jumped so well! I won my first Air DH Invitational on this bike so it’s special to me…my little bro is now riding it so it’s still in the family (means I can steal it…)." - Cami Bragg

Eddie's Collection

I researched the Pipeline and learned that Copeland Sporting Goods in my area had carried the RM. They’ve since closed shop. I drove there and spotted the Pipeline that Wade Simmons had used in the video series. The manager had discounted it because the purple and lime colors were not appealing but Wade thought it was and so did I.

Sweat the details - 32 years on a Blizzard

I bought my "1986.5" (as advertised by the seller) Blizzard in Whistler in 1989. I rode it all over the Valley, Blackcomb, Fromme, Cypress, the Gulf Islands, Vancouver Island, and the Sunshine Coast.  I raced it XC, DH, DS, and hill climb. After a number of years in storage, I got the itch to ride it again in 2009.

Whether it’s a brand new Altitude Powerplay or their retro Hammer from the 90's, we love them all. Here are some of the stories we've collected from riders around the world.
